THE Straits-born Chinese are known for much more than their food. Theirs is a rich cultural legacy ranging from music to jewellery xmas gift on sale.

 Dr Khoo Joo Ee, the recently-retired Universiti Malaya Museum of Asian Art curator says there is a revival of interest in traditional jewellery among the present generation. With that comes the search to own some of their own, if not genuine, then those that look a little like the real thing. It is the same with nyonya ceramic ware xmas gift sale.

Khoo, a Penang nyonya herself, made these observations at a talk on Material Culture of the Straits Chinese: Nyonyaware & Jewellery recently.

 It included a slide presentation of her book The Straits Chinese which she spent four years writing. 

 Khoo studied local fine art and art history in the Netherlands Links Necklaces , England and the United States, and obtained her doctorate from the University of London in 1976. She has devoted more than 20 years of scholarly research on the cultures of Southeast Asia, particularly the Straits Chinese.

 ”The nyonya liked to wear a lot of jewellery for daily wear. They would adorn their hair, ears, neck, chest, waist, arms, fingers and ankles. Then on festive occasions, the women would be glittering with even more gold, silver and precious stones,” she said.

 ”The importance of jewellery was spelt out even more in the case of the nyonya bride. The bride’s jewellery, along with luxurious fabrics and items of gold and silver sweetie Bracelet, were usually laid out and displayed for inspection by guests.

 ”The bride herself wore the biggest and heaviest piece of jewellery, and this included a wonderfully elaborate headdress,” she said.

 ”Hong Kong taught me that I wanted to do things for myself and that all things are possible if you have the aptitude and the enthusiasm,” she says. “There is energy here and the ‘yes’ factor.”

 Ms Ducas is disconcertingly unadorned for someone who has created a global silver empire in a little over a decade xmas gift sale. She is wearing a plain gold wedding band and a watch.

 ”I left my jewellery by the sink at home,” she says. “I was on the plane before I realised.”

 Such oversight can be expected from a busy executive and mother of three for whom a day’s work can mean a long-haul flight to a far-flung corner of the rapidly expanding Links of London network.

 Ms Ducas happened upon her career through a series of coincidences Links Necklaces , an entrepreneurial streak and a lot of hard work. Her mother’s business supplied fish to restaurants around London and it was a gift idea that led to the first cuff-links, in the shape of salmon.

 ”My mother rang me up and said she desperately needed presents for the chefs,” says Ms Ducas. “I had had a whole lot of jewellery made for myself because I couldn’t find what I wanted. I thought if they could do it with jewellery they could do it with cuff-links.”

 The gifts were a great success, not only with the chefs but also at Harvey Nichols, where Ms Ducas took a few extra pairs one lunchtime. “They liked them,” she says sweetie Bracelet. “But they needed a range, not just one kind. I went back two weeks later with a collection.”

 But life became complicated for the young Ms Ducas. Her mother died suddenly and she inherited the fish business.
